Footnotes:

1. The Chinese character 痕, means scar, trace, or mark. In Japanese, it is also used to represent the cry of a fox, “kon-kon.”

2. Zashiki-warashi (parlor-child) or Zashiki-bokko are a form of yokai that take the shape of small children. They are said to live in strange rooms and perform pranks. It is considered good fortune to see one in Japan.

3. Just as American sweethearts might carve their names into a heart on the trunk of a tree, Japanese sweethearts often write their names under drawings of small umbrellas.

4. Hyakki Yagyō (The Night Parade of One Hundred Demons) refers to a parade of thousands of supernatural creatures that march through the streets of Japan at night. A terrifying eruption of the supernatural world into our own, it is similar to the original concept of pandemonium in English.

5. This phrase is a poetic way of saying I love you. The Japanese writer, Natsume Soseki (1867–1916), during his teaching years, supposedly overhead a student translating “I love you” using the literal translation “Ware Kimi o Aisu,” which sounds very awkward in Japanese. Soseki suggested the subtle, more nuanced translation “tsuki ga kirei desu ne” (“The Moon is beautiful, isn’t it?”), believing this better suited Japanese sensibility.

6. In Japanese, hana-kotoba (“flower words” or “flower language”) is a symbolic system, using various flowers to represent different words or ideas.
